Over the last few years, commission after commission I've slowly got to a stage where I just can't continue any more. I need to finish school too and it began to feel impossible. I want to use the time to improve. In the little spare time, I wan to paint something for myself and improve my life generally, while I still can. Therefore I'm putting any freelance activity at hold. For as long as I need to. Thank you for understanding.

This time I made no lines for change. The reason for me starting with rough sketch this semester was to avoid anatomy flaws later on in painting and also to see how the character of strokes changes. When you already have all the important scary parts drawn in lines, you can lay colours there like a pig, not worrying about anything. the opposite approach can be judged here. The expression is super smooth and Its easy to slip into soft shapes which doesn’t hold together somehow. I have done this mistake many o’times. What works here well are the “blocked out” shapes with minimum texture. You have the face, the hair and the neck. These are distinct by value and color and most importantly by the sharp edges, (Hair on forehead, shadow under jaw), that stands even more against the soft nature of the rest of the painting.

However I did have to use "liquify" at the end because proportions were off a bit.

Also gave up painting the dress pattern right from the beginning. But I thought it would be too plain without it. So a quick photo took care of it for me. not sure if this is the right thing to get used to though.

If you have time, I'd love your thoughts on something I'm doing Civil War-related.

Gunny's Boys 4(wip) by TheSkaldofNvrwinter

It's a work in progress. Now, my series is cartoon-based, not super realism. But what do you think? I think I missed a belt and bayonet scabbard--I have a book lol--and maybe accoutrement? This is a "battle line" drawing: would a line soldier have his pack and stuff on? I'd think not...

I think making his legs shorter would solve some issues. Anyway as for the bags and stuff. It really depends on him, if he wants to carry stuff around or not. Think of him as a real person. Think of what he does during the day. Does he have a sweetheart back home and what are his relations with family. What sort of childhood did he have. Maybe this all have something to do with what he looks like and what he carries. Ammo, smokes, letters and photos. Maybe ornamented knife he stole from an enemy corpse. There are stuff you want to have near when you're about to be shot at
